B8 Handmade Frames

2009

A modular frame platform exploring how different materials shape ride characteristics.

Overview

The B8 frame was developed as a modular platform built around a carbon lugged construction, allowing different frame tubes to be combined and exchanged across various materials.

The concept started with carbon, natural bamboo and titanium tubes, and later evolved into the development of laminated bamboo — an engineered material made from bamboo veneer, which was granted a patent. The system was designed to explore how different materials influence ride characteristics while maintaining a consistent frame structure.

From the beginning, the geometry was inspired by cyclocross bikes and off-road riding, combining wider tire clearance and lower gearing with a more versatile riding position. Early versions used a flat bar setup, as suitable components for drop bars combined with MTB drivetrains were not yet widely available.

The project was first presented at Berliner Fahrradschau in 2012, where the concept was not widely understood at the time. Today, similar ideas are widely recognized in what is now known as the gravel bike category.

Laminated Bamboo

Engineered natural material

Laminated bamboo tubing was developed as an alternative to natural bamboo, using layered bamboo veneer bonded under pressure. It combines the smooth ride quality of bamboo with improved structural consistency and durability.

The material was later granted a patent and represents a key development within the B8 project.

Titanium

Durable and refined

Titanium offers a balanced combination of strength, durability and ride comfort. Within the B8 system, it provides a reliable and versatile option suitable for a wide range of riding conditions.

Carbon

Light and responsive

Carbon tubing delivers low weight and high stiffness, making it the most performance-oriented option within the B8 platform. It emphasizes efficient power transfer and precise handling.

Natural Bamboo

Original concept

Natural bamboo was one of the initial materials used in the B8 system, offering a smooth and compliant ride. It was later replaced by laminated bamboo, which provides greater consistency and structural reliability.

B8 Frame Geometry

B8 Project geometry diagram

The B8 geometry is rooted in cyclocross design, adapted for versatile riding across mixed terrain. It balances stability, efficiency and comfort while allowing the use of wider tires and MTB drivetrains.

A sloping top tube increases stand-over clearance, enabling a single frame size to accommodate a broader range of riders.

Fit can be adjusted through stem length and spacer height, covering rider heights of approximately 175–185 cm without requiring custom geometry.

Cable routing along the top tube and seat stays keeps cables away from mud and debris, improving reliability in demanding conditions.
